WINTON – The Hertford County Board of Commissioners have forwarded an approved resolution to the NC Department of Transportation, requesting them to add a residential subdivision street to the state’s system of maintained secondary roads.

The measure came before the commissioners at their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, March 21. There, the board learned that a petition was on file with NCDOT calling for Elizabeth Court, located in the Vinson Mill Acres subdivision off Vinson Mill Road, to become a state maintained road.

According to that petition, Elizabeth Court is approximately three-tenths of one mile in length. There are seven occupied homes with street frontage.

“As a matter of protocol, NCDOT requires that the board of county commissioners consider a resolution in support of a request to add a road to their system,” explained County Manager David Cotton. “NCDOT then evaluates what is needed for that road to be improved upon before they add it to their system.”

The evaluation by NCDOT includes a determination if the road meets minimum standards and criteria established by the Division of Highways. If those minimum standards and criteria are met, those owning property along that road will be required to grant right-of-way to NCDOT. That right-of-way will be extend the entire length of the road and may include areas needed for proper drainage.

The resolution was approved without objection by the county commissioners.
