“Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories.”

MILLENNIUM – Virginia Dare Futrell, age 86, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 28, 2022 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Futrell was born on September 30, 1935 to Archie and Eliza Newsome in Hertford County, NC. Virginia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, who loved her family dearly.

Virginia was loved by many and will be deeply missed by all that knew her. Although caring for her family was her greatest joy, she also enjoyed rescuing and caring for her many animals, sewing and working in her garden.

She was never afraid of a challenge, and early in her life obtained her pilot’s license, and often enjoyed flying her plane.

She will be remembered by all she encountered as “Miss Virginia”, that nice lady that served good food at the delis, bakery and ice-cream shop and was always ready to take in a stray dog, or offer up kind words and a loving hug.

Virginia knew what hard work was, but was always willing to work harder to make those around her feel comfortable, safe and welcome. Her family takes great pride and comfort in knowing the community will remember her that way.

Mrs. Futrell was preceded in death by husband, Henry Clay Futrell; father, Archie Newsome; mother, Eliza Pate Newsome; brothers, James Newsome and Archie Newsome; daughter, Michelle Futrell; son, Christopher Futrell; and great-grandson, James Lynch.

Virginia leaves to cherish her memories to: her children, Betty Raye Futrell, Cindy Bowen and husband Don Bowen, Donna Covington and husband Chris Covington, Henry Futrell and wife Melinda Futrell and Christine Taylor; eight grandchildren, Seth Bowen, Crystal Covington Sanek, Joshua Taylor, Heather Taylor Lynch, Eric Covington, Clay Futrell, Bobby Futrell and Nicholas Covington; ten great-grandchildren, Lily Taylor, Hayden Bowen, Gabriel Taylor, Caleb Bowen, Casen Futrell, Aurora Lynch, Cora Futrell, Freya Lynch, Maddox Sanek and Amira Taylor; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

We take comfort in knowing that her path to Heaven was not a lonely one, but guided by family and all of the animals she gave a loving home.
