COFIELD – A 12-year-old girl was treated and released from the hospital after being shot while inside a residence near here Wednesday night.

Hertford County Sheriff Dexter Hayes said the shots were apparently fired from outside the residence, possibly from a vehicle. The residence is located in the 1000 block of the Ahoskie-Cofield Road.

The child was shot in the leg while lying on a couch. No one else inside the home was injured.

“There are no leads in this case,” Hayes told the R-C News-Herald today (Thursday). “No one saw a vehicle; all they heard were gunshots.

“The young lady wasn’t the intended target, just an innocent bystander,” Hayes added.

The Sheriff said there were shots fired in the same area on Tuesday night.

“No one saw anything on Tuesday night either; they just heard the gunshots,” he stated.

Hayes is asking for the community to step up and help the sheriff’s office solve this case. Those with information can contact the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office at 252-358-7800.

“You can give us your information and remain anonymous,” Sheriff Hayes said.
