LEWISTON WOODVILLE – Bertie County officials are requesting improvements to Weeping Mary Road (SR 1128).

The road, located off NC 11 just south of Lewiston Woodville, is paved from the NC 11 intersection to just past Hoggard Road. The state-maintained portion of the dirt road continues to just past the access road leading to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s boat ramp, which opened in 2016.

At their regularly scheduled meeting earlier this month, the Bertie County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution, one in support of improvements to Weeping Mary Road.

The resolution proposes that the North Carolina Department of Transportation should widen the road and allow for more ingress and egress, for all parties served by the road, consisting of a traditional secondary road construction to the limit allowable by right of way.

It also proposes that the road needs to be a full 60 feet in width for the first section and to the maximum maintenance limits on the remaining section.

The resolution calls for existing culverts to be upgraded, and new equalizer culverts to be installed as feasible to accommodate the flooding on the Roanoke River caused by Kerr Lake Dam release.

Those improvements, as noted in the resolution, “should reduce the frequency and damage and reduce impacts on accessibility.”

The cost of the project is estimated at $1,173,000.

The approved resolution was forwarded to the District 1 office of the NC Department of Transportation.
