WINDSOR – A Bertie County sheriff’s deputy is in critical condition following a wreck on January 5.

“The deputy was driving north on US 13, and it was raining pretty heavily,” reported Trooper D.M. Boseman of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Boseman said hydroplaning is believed to be the cause of the accident. The deputy, identified as Colter D. Lipscomb, overcorrected the vehicle, which then ran off the left side of the highway. The vehicle hit the ditch and continued into the woods, striking a tree on the driver’s side door before coming to a stop.

The incident occurred shortly before noon on Wednesday.

Boseman told the News Herald on Friday that Deputy Lipscomb is still in critical condition at the hospital. He suffered multiple injuries in the crash, including a brain bleed, broken pelvis, broken tailbone, and internal bleeding.

Boseman said Lipscomb was on duty at the time of the accident, but they’re not sure yet if he was responding to a call. The crash remains under investigation.
