COLERAIN – George Astor Hughes, age 83, a resident of Perrytown Road, Colerain, died Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at his residence with his family at his side.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at Walker Funeral Home from 6-7:30 p.m. and at other times at the home.

George was born in Hertford County on June 2, 1938 to the late George Worley Hughes and Adelaide Temperance Perry Hughes. He was the husband of Evy Rawls Hughes who survives.

George proudly served his country in the National Guard. He was the owner of Hughes Auto, Inc., and a farmer for many years. He was also an active member of Perrytown Assembly of God where he served as Song Leader, Deacon, and Superintendent. George was a founding member and highly active with the Perrytown Fire Department, serving as Chief, Assistant Chief, Secretary, and Treasurer.

George is survived by his wife, Evy Rawls Hughes of the home; one daughter, Sophia “Tempie” Hughes Simons of Wilmington; one sister, Margaret Faye Hughes Holland of Suffolk VA; one brother, Marshall Graham Hughes (Velma) of Colerain; two grandchildren, Megan Simmons Price (Jonathan), and Lindsey Jorja Simons; two great grandchildren, Aspen Gray Price and Elijah Reid Price.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 19, 2021 at Perrytown Assembly of God, with Pastors David Baker and McCray Dove officiating. Special music will be by Jonathon Price and McCray Dove. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Colerain.
