RALEIGH – Former State Senator Erica Smith launched her campaign on Tuesday for North Carolina’s Second District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“I grew up on a family farm and became a mother of four, an educator, a minister, an engineer and a State Senator fighting for farmers and small towns across North Carolina,” said Smith. “With the retirement of Rep. G.K. Butterfield, the working people of North Carolina’s 2nd District need a new champion in Congress. That is why I am now launching an historic campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives. It takes one of us, for all of us, to win.”

The campaign launched with a new video, entitled “Faith.”

She said her campaign will not accept large corporate PAC and fossil fuel industry donations. It will rather rely on “grassroots donations and support among working people across the district will drive the campaign to overcome the racial gerrymander of North Carolina’s 2nd District.”

Smith, a former member of the Northampton County Board of Education before becoming a State Senator, said she is “focused on winning real progress for working people, strengthening rural communities, and protecting our farmers with popular initiatives like connecting our communities with universal broadband, lowering medical costs with Medicare for all and respecting the dignity of work by finally raising the minimum wage.”
