RICH SQUARE – Virginia Ferrell Brown Rawls, age 90, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at the Scotland House in Scotland Neck NC. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Rawls was born in Rich Square on September 21, 1931, a daughter of the late Otis Carson Brown and Grace Blowe Brown. Ferrell was a longtime, faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Aulander. She was a devoted homemaker, a loving wife and mother to her beloved boys. She attended East Carolina Teachers College (ECTC) where she was a proud Pirate. She also worked over the years with the family farm, Rawls Hereford Farm, worked at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, with Belk Tyler in Ahoskie and with Dr. John Stanley’s medical practice in Woodland.

Being with her beloved family and friends was the biggest joy in her life! She had a warm spot for holidays and for any family get-togethers. She loved her vegetable garden, her azaleas, and her roses especially. Ferrell also loved doing her artwork, particularly in her later years.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Edward Rawls; a brother, Otis Brown; two sisters, Sue Brown, Billie Lemaster; as well as two brothers-in-law, Charles Brown and Warren Browning.

Left to cherish her memory are her three beloved sons, Martin Keith Rawls of Aulander, Jeffrey Neal Rawls and wife Tracy of Raleigh, and Clay Brown Rawls and wife, Theresa of Ahoskie, NC. She was tremendously proud of her two granddaughters, Meredith Rawls of Durham and Anna Rawls of Washington, DC; two sisters, Margaret Browning of Winston Salem, NC, and Ruth (Jack) Boyer of Concord, NC; and a brother, Wilson (JoAnne) Barnes of Suffolk, VA.

The family will receive friends and family on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, 116 Short St., Rich Square. All are welcome for social hour from 12-1 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 1 p.m. also at the funeral home. Rev. Mickey Willard will officiate.
