Armstead named new director for RCCC’s Small Business Center

AHOSKIE – Roanoke-Chowan Community College has announced Derrick Armstead as the new director of the Small Business Center (SBC) which is located on the college’s campus in the Freeland Building.

The SBC provides small business owners with information they need for success, including advice on marketing, sales, bookkeeping, and management.

“We are delighted to welcome Mr. Armstead to the role of director of our Small Business Center,” states Wendy Vann, vice president for external affairs and executive director of the foundation. “He brings much experience to this position and as director will provide consultation services to small businesses on a wide range of topics.”

Armstead received a bachelor of arts degree in English from North Carolina Central University and attended Massachusetts School of Law. His experience includes many years as an employment consultant with NCWorks Career Center in Greenville, as well as other positions in social services and as a legal compliance officer.

While employed with the NCWorks Career Center, he was awarded the 2018 American Veterans (AMVETS) National “Veteran Friendly Employer of the Year” award regarding his collaboration with North Carolina businesses seeking to hire and retain military veterans.

Armstead is a member of the National Career Development Association (NCDA) and the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP). His certifications include Global Career Development Facilitator and Certified Career Services Professional. As a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he is the recipient of numerous veteran awards.

“I am looking forward to establishing cooperative relationships with business and industry leaders to identify and evaluate business training needs,” states Armstead. “We are inviting area business leaders to the Small Business Center later this month to conduct an assessment of workforce needs in the Roanoke-Chowan area.”

Roanoke-Chowan Community College and Hertford County Economic Development will host a ‘Business and Industry’ meeting of community stakeholders, ‘Partnership for Success,’ from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26 26 in the Community Room, Small Business Center, in the Freeland Building.
