To the Editor:

We now have college caliber ballfields….three of them… in Ahoskie.

This effort was all started by Cal Bryant’s editorial about “Stepping to the Plate” back in 2018. The ballfields at that time were not safe to play on.

Cal’s words were followed by the Ahoskie Town Council figuratively stepping to the plate and finding the funds necessary to redo the three ballfields.

Back then it was like playing a baseball game on cement with a fine layer of sand on top. My grandson still has a scar from sliding into second base.

The Ahoskie Town Council then made a second extremely wise decision when they put Joey Parker in charge of maintaining the ballfields. The town had a vision for a better park and the results now are spectacular to behold.

Now, instead of scars and bruises, moms are complaining of having to clean dirty uniforms. This is caused by the kids playing the game being able show off their energy without fear by sliding, diving, tumbling into the bases. They are out there having fun….that’s what it’s all about to me!

Watching them having a blast is a true joy to this grandfather. I hate to see the season come to an end, but as they always say in the world of sports, “Just wait until next year!”
