AHOSKIE, NC – David Haynes Ward, age 72, of Williford Road, Ahoskie, passed away on April 24, 2021 at his residence.
David was born in Ahoskie, Hertford County, NC, on June 5, 1948, a son of the late Samuel Silas and Jennie Lee Pierce Ward. David worked as a truck driver for Freeman Metal for many years and thoroughly loved what he did. Along with truck driving came his so-called trucker names. At home, he was David or dad but on the road he was known as “Carolina Kid” or “Spanky”. David enjoyed many activities such as golfing and fishing but his true passion was being a ham radio operator. With his call sign being “KU4PD”, he would spend hours sending messages to many different places, including talking to NASA. Besides his love for Ham Radio, he had also been a Morse code translator for the military in years past. David enjoyed his retirement years, often saying he could do what he wanted, when he wanted. He was a kind spirit who will be missed by all who knew him.
Along with his parents, David was preceded in death by his sister, Emily Minton; a brother-in-law, “Snoopy” Rutherford; and his sister in law, Ann Ward.
Left to cherish David’s memory is his beloved wife, Cassandra; two sons, Shaun Ward and wife Tracy of Ahoskie, and David Haynes Ward, Jr. of Ahoskie; his daughter, Betty Jo Odom and husband Tim of Conway; his step-daughter, Cassie Bryan and husband Danny of Utica, PA; three brothers, Tommy Ward of Plymouth, Jimmy Ward and wife Glenda of Ahoskie, and Sammy Ward and wife Robin of Manteo; two sisters, Joey Rutherford of Ahoskie, and Connie Jones and husband Dale of Roanoke Rapids; along with 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 26, 2021, from 11:00 am – 11:45 am at Brantley’s Grove Baptist Church, Ahoskie, NC with a celebration of life funeral service to follow at 12:00 pm in the church with Pastor Jimmy Ward officiating.
