POWELLSVILLE – A single vehicle crash near here Saturday night claimed the life of a Colerain man and sent another man to the hospital.

William Franklin Mizzelle III, age 24, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly before midnight on Cremo Road near its intersection with US 13 south of Powellsville.

Raquon Hayes, age 24, of Colerain was a passenger in Mizzelle’s vehicle. The accident report, filed by NC Highway Patrol Trooper Zachary Mize, showed that Hayes was critically injured and was airlifted from the scene and flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Mize said that Hayes was ejected from the vehicle.

In his report, Mize stated that Mizzelle was operating a 2015 Audi, traveling west on Cremo Road. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the road in a curve and then struck a ditch and several trees before coming to rest.

Mize cited speed as a contributing factor in the fatal crash.

The fatality was the second this year within the Highway Patrol’s Troop A / District 2 area, which includes Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties. Both of those fatalities have been in Bertie County.
