The high school football season continues this Friday (March 26) for two local teams while another is opting to apply the brakes.

Hertford Co. at Currituck

The Bears are coming off a win vs. First Flight where they scored twice in the fourth quarter to post a 26-18 victory.

“We had a good first drive in that game, then struggled, but found a way to come back there at the end,” said HCHS head coach Terrance Saxby.

This week, the Bears (2-1 overall; 1-1 in league play) hit the road for a conference game at Currituck County (2-1; 0-1).

“Currituck is well-coached,” said Saxby. “They have good athletes in the offensive backfield and along the offensive and defensive lines. They are mostly a running team on offense.

“Defensively, we have to understand our assignments and we need to tackle well,” Saxby added. “Offensively, it’s again all about execution and take advantage of our opportunities. We also need to eliminate penalties.”

Pamlico at Northampton

The Jaguars return home after suffering a 28-22 loss at Southside last week.

“We had too many turnovers and made other mistakes in key situations, all of which cost us a win,” said Northampton head coach George Privott.

This Friday, Northampton puts its 1-1 record on the line vs. Pamlico County, also sporting a 1-1 overall record.

“Pamlico runs the option offense, just like us, so we know what to prepare for,” Privott noted. “They have a good quarterback and a good running back.

“We need to defend their option attack well and do a better job of protecting the ball. We’ll work on that this week,” Privott closed.

Gates Co. ends season

After starting the season at 0-2 with a limited number of players, Gates County has opted to end its season.
