To the Editor:

The theme for Social Worker Month 2021 is Social Workers Are Essential.

Social Workers are essential to the community well-being. As Social Workers, they are trained to help people address personal and systemic barriers to optimal living. They are employed to effect positive change with individuals, families, groups and entire communities.

Being a Social Worker today has tremendously changed since the outbreak of the Corona Virus known as Covid-19. Social Workers are experiencing challenges of not being able to always maintain levels of contact with people such as they would expect during normal times. It is still our duty to protect and provide services to our clients especially during these challenging moments of the pandemic.

We are extremely dedicated in meeting the health and well-being of our clients especially during the pandemic. We just find more clever ways to incorporate safety.

The Hertford County Department of Social Services continues to provide services as needed to our community. We continue to find ways to promote a safe environment for everyone. Due to the high stressors of Social Workers, self-care should be incorporated into their daily routine as an essential ingredient for effective and ethical practice. Self-care is not being selfish, you cannot serve others well when you do not take care of yourself.

At Hertford County Department of Social Services, the Social Workers strive on a daily basis to perform the duties of our mission statement which states, “Hertford County Department of Social Services seeks to protect and provide assistance to the citizens of our community”. We provide these services with pleasure as we continue to partner with other Social Workers from other agencies in the community to achieve one common goal as we strive to meet the needs of our citizens.
