Hertford County sweeps North Edgecombe

AHOSKIE – They played the same school on different nights, but the outcome was the same as Hertford County swept North Edgecombe here earlier this week in non-conference basketball action.

In boys action, the Bears rode the hot hand of Daylan Askew who poured in 29 points to lead HCHS to an 83-57 win.

The Bears, who improved to 2-0, raced out to a 10-point lead (23-13) by the end of the first quarter and were never seriously challenged by their Edgecombe County guests past that point.

HCHS led 41-28 at halftime, and 59-43 at the end of the third quarter.

Joining Askew in the double-digit scoring column for HCHS were William Valentine (13) and Israel Powell (10).

Rounding out the Bears scoring were Keondre Rodgers (9), Quadre Douglas (8), Antoine Lawrence (6), and two points each from Keveon Rodgers, Jayden Daniels, Ashton Lassiter, and Quenton Wright.

One night later (Wednesday), the Hertford County varsity girls completed the sweep by routing North Edgecombe, 75-31.

HCHS led at halftime, 43-18.

A trio of Lady Bears scored in double figures: Desiree Askew (17), Qua’Dajah Ruffin (12), and Kanae Edwards (11).

Tamia Britt and Ashley Jenkins added nine points each for HCHS. Rounding out the scoring were Ashanti Bowser (5), Daysha Holloman (4), Christian Olds (4), Jaliyah Mitchell (2) and Jabrea Everett (2).

The Lady Bears improved to 2-0 with the victory.

Both Hertford County teams will open Northeastern Coastal Conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 19 when they travel to the Outer Banks to face First Flight High School.
