WINTON – A third person has been arrested in connection with an attempted murder case in Gates County.

Roger Antonio Goodman, age 44 of Ahoskie, is being held under a $500,000 bond in the Hertford County Detention Center on the charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Gates County Sheriff Ray Campbell said the arrest was made on Nov. 6. He added that Goodman was previously a resident of Gates County.

Goodman and his two co-conspirators – 35-year-old Brian K. Valentine and Tracey Mitchell, age 27, both of Ahoskie – are alleged to have shot Alexander Mizelle multiple times on Oct. 7 while he parked down a path on Sandbanks Road near Eure. Mizelle’s vehicle, with him wounded while still inside, was then set on fire.

Mizelle sustained gunshot wounds and burn injuries, but somehow managed to walk more than one mile where he knocked on the door of a residence. That homeowner summoned emergency responders. He was airlifted to a hospital where he treated for his wounds and burns.

Sheriff Campbell contacted the North Carolina SBI on Oct. 8 for assistance in the case.

Following the investigation and information provided to law enforcement, Valentine and Mitchell were developed as suspects and subsequently arrested by the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office and the Ahoskie Police Department.

Goodman was later added as a suspect.

“A continued thanks to all the agencies that have assisted and continue to help with this investigation,” stated Sheriff Campbell as he referenced the aid of the NCSBI, the Ahoskie Police Department, the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office, the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office, the Greenville Police Department, and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.
