COMO – Luther Raleigh Askew, age 94, passed away on November 5, 2020 at his home.

Mr. Askew was born in Northampton County on May 8, 1926, a son of the late Thomas and Dalah Perry Askew. Raleigh was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and most of all farming. He served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater and was proud of his service to his country. He was a devoted faithful member of Buckhorn Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for over 75 years. He served on the cemetery committee for many years and was always helpful to funeral directors in getting grave locations. Raleigh was a Christian man who knew his bible, often reading the bible instead of watching TV. He was community minded and served it well in many capacities. Most of all, Raleigh loved his family and took pride in keeping them together and sponsoring family gatherings, especially at Christmas and pig pickings.

Besides his parents, Raleigh was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.

Left to cherish his memory is a sister, Dora Harrell of Virginia; two nieces, Brenda (Jerry) Fletcher of Zirconia, NC, and Madeline Parker of Suffolk, VA; four nephews, Mitchell (Josie) Howell of Willow Spring, NC, and Ronald (Carolyn) Howell of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Steve (Donna) Harrell of Quinton, VA, and Danny (Sharon) Harrell of Virginia Beach, VA.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 8, 2020 at 1 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Buckhorn Baptist Church, prior to the graveside service.

A graveside celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2020 at 2 p.m. at the Buckhorn Baptist Church Cemetery, Como, NC, with Rev. Bob Deacon officiating.
