(Editor’s Note: This story and its headline reflect changes from Wednesday’s print edition after we learned Tuesday evening that the child tragically killed in this accident was a female and not a male as first reported. The spelling of that child’s first name is correct in the online version of the story.)

WINTON – A Pitt County woman and her young child were tragically killed in a two-vehicle accident near here Friday night.

Amanda Page Horne, 41, of Greenville, and her nine-year-old daughter, Karsyn, died in the mishap that occurred on the two-lane portion of US 13 between the NC 461 and US 158/NC 45 intersections near Winton.

According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper H.M. Mizelle, Horne was operating a Lincoln passenger car southbound on US 13.

Mizelle said Horne was attempting to pass another vehicle when her car stuck head-on a Chevrolet truck pulling a trailer. That northbound truck was operated by 17-year-old Khamani Saunders of Gatesville. There were two passengers in the truck: Ronald Saunders, 18, of Sunbury and Charlie Wilkins, 21, of Franklin, VA.

After impact in the northbound lane, the two vehicles came to rest in the roadway. Both caught fire, according to Mizelle.

All three of the truck’s occupants were transported by Hertford County EMS to Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. Wilkins, a backseat passenger in the truck, was later airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. His medical condition is unknown.

Seven people have now died in motor vehicle accidents this year within the Highway Patrol’s Troop A / District II area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties). Four of those deaths have occurred in Hertford County.
