COFIELD, NC – Mary Ann Castelloe Smith, 80, of 250 No Say Lane, Cofield, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 31, 2020, from Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

Mary Ann was born in the Todd’s Cross community of Bertie County on October 11, 1939, to the late Everett Wendell Castelloe and Bertha Pearl Johnson Castelloe. She worked on the family farm before operating her own business, Corner Grocery, serving the Brantley’s Grove community, and later worked as the operator of Parker’s Ferry from which she retired.

A 4-H Leader to the children of Hertford County, her faith in the Lord was evidenced by her service in church work during her life. She had enjoyed membership in Ross Baptist Church in Bertie County, and both Brantley’s Grove and Holly Springs Baptist churches in Hertford County, where through the years she had served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and as a volunteer with the NC Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Brodie Castelloe; sisters, Bonnie Seay and Jeanette Farless; and nephew, Jerry Castelloe.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 44 years, Kent Douglas Smith; three daughters, Joanne Honeycutt and husband, Ben, of New Hill, Joyce Ann Bell and husband, Earl, of Ahoskie, and Wendy Smith Wilson of Pulaski, VA; two grandchildren, Jenny Bland and husband, Keith, of Ahoskie, and Devin James Wilson of Pulaski; and two great-grandchildren, Caleb Bland and Noah Bland, both of Ahoskie. Also surviving are two brothers, Harlon Castelloe and wife, Peggy, of Windsor, and O’Neal Castelloe and wife, Mary, of Edenton; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved deeply.

A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 2, at 11:00 a.m. in the Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, and will be conducted by the Rev. Elmer Vann and the Rev. Paul Ange.

The family is receiving friends at her home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Roanoke-Chowan Wildlife Club, P.O. Box 82, Winton, NC 27986, or to Holly Springs Baptist Church, P.O. Box 61, Cofield, NC 27922.
