GATESVILLE – An Ahoskie man was killed in a single-vehicle accident near here on May 2.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol identified the motorist as 22-year-old Caleb Scott Jordan.

According to the accident report filed by NCHP Trooper D.S. Beard, Jordan was operating a 2008 Infiniti eastbound on US 158 at around 1 a.m. on Saturday, May 2.

Upon reaching the Roduco community, Jordan’s vehicle – which was traveling at a high rate of speed according to Trooper Beard – crossed the centerline and traveled off the left side of the road.

At that point, the vehicle struck a highway sign before continuing along the westbound shoulder of the road. Just after crossing the intersection of US 158 and the Tuggie Eure Road, the vehicle entered a farm field where it struck a utility pole and a tree before catching on fire.

Other than traveling in excess of the posted speed limit, Beard listed careless and reckless driving as a contributing factor to the fatal accident.

The fatality was the fourth of the year in the NCHP’s Troop A / District II area (Bertie, Gates, and Hertford counties). Two of those fatalities have occurred in Gates County.
