MURFREESBORO, NC – Charles Ellis Evans, age 98, of Holly Hill Road, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, NC.

A native of Hertford County, Ellis was born on April 5, 1922 to Emmitt Nolley Evans and Sadie Ellis Evans in Murfreesboro, NC. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Ellis was a devoted member of Murfreesboro United Methodist Church.

He was a true businessman, running Evans Company clothing store on Main Street Murfreesboro for sixty plus years and enjoyed sharing his woodworking talent with others. He loved people, which showed daily in his devotion to the town of Murfreesboro and his clothing store. He proudly served his country as a Merchant Marine and later in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the American George Lodge #17 A.F. & A.M. Ellis loved his family and will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of seventy plus years, Kathleen Evans; a son, Charles Ellis Evans, Jr.; and sisters, Betsy, Catherine, and Jane.

Ellis is survived by a son, Dale Evans of Murfreesboro; a daughter, Susan Evans Swain and husband Dennis of Hertford; four granddaughters, Amber T. Nieradka and husband Ryan of Raleigh, Dawn Jones Aubin and husband Ed of Moseley, VA, Kris Evans of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jenny Evans of Washington, DC; four grandsons, Timothy Evans and wife Allie of Murfreesboro, Kevin Jones and wife Jennifer of Hertford, Dennis Swain, Jr. of Charlotte, and Charles “Chuck” Evans, III of Nashville, TN; four great-granddaughters, Brynn Nieradka, Kaylyn Jones, Kelsey Godfrey, and Kinlee Godfrey; two great-grandsons, Kolby Jones, and Cameron Scott; and one great-great grandson, Leland Mayo.

Due to the circumstances with COVID-19 restrictions, Garrett-Sykes Memorial Chapel, Murfreesboro, NC will be open for friends to pay their respects and sign the register book on Thursday, May 7, 2020, 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm.

A private family graveside funeral services will be held on Friday, May 8, 2020, at the Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro, NC, with Pastor Jason Villegas officiating.
