SUNBURY, NC – Jerry Casey Hobbs, 73, of 319 Acorn Hill Road, Sunbury, NC, died Friday, March 27, 2020, in the Sentara Heart Hospital, Norfolk, VA.

Mr. Hobbs was a lifelong resident of Gates County, raised in Hobbsville by his parents, Raleigh O. and Emma Hollowell Hobbs, and with his brothers, Alton, Ronald, and Billy Hobbs. All of them preceded him in death.

A retired insurance agent, he worked for 42 years with the former Southland Life Insurance Company and its various subsidiaries. A member of Beulah Baptist Church, he had also served in the Sunbury Volunteer Fire Dept. for 18 years, and in the North Carolina National Guard.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 53 years, Gail Joyner Hobbs; two daughters, Dianne H. Mickey and husband, Robert, of Hobbsville, and Janet H. Batts and husband, Don, of Greenville; and four grandchildren, Patrick Mickey (Ashley) of Rock Hill, SC, Kyle Mickey of Hobbsville, and Ashlyn and Carter Batts, both of Greenville.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery and will be conducted by Pastor Greg Jernigan. The family recognizes the restrictions associated with the Coronavirus Pandemic and understands family and friends using their care and judgment concerning attendance.

In accordance with Jerry’s wishes, he had expressed that for the 42 years of his career he had dressed in business attire, and wished now for those attending his funeral, as well as himself, to be dressed in casual clothes.
