JAMESVILLE, NC – James Eley Newsome, Sr., 82, of Jamesville, died Friday, January 31, 2019 at his residence.

Born August 5, 1937 in Hertford County, he was the son of the late James Kelly Newsome and Annie Bell Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Manning Newsome.

Eley was an educator, working his life as a principal and later assistant superintendent with Hertford County Public Schools and after his retirement became a gentleman farmer.

He was a member of Ahoskie First Baptist Church; a member of Davie Lodge No. 39 of Ahoskie, the Roanoke Chowan Shrine Club, Scottish and York Rite and a Shriner, serving in 1999 as Potentate.

His family includes his sons, James E. Newsome, Jr. and wife Kolleen of Greensboro, N.C. and Odis B. Newsome and wife Melissa of Raleigh, N.C. and eight grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Saturday, February 8, 2020 at First Baptist Church, Plymouth, with Pastor Paul Harrington and Reverend Grant H. Graff officiating.

The family suggests sending memorial contributions to Jamesville EMS & Rescue or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
