MURFREESBORO – HGTV Network is taking on one of its most ambitious projects to date: renovating a town.

The Murfreesboro Chamber of Commerce is hoping their town might be that lucky winner. Chamber Director Daryl Williams said when the Board found out about the contest, they decided they wanted to encourage locals to apply.

“The project for us is going to try to get as many local people as possible to submit an entry,” he explained, noting that only individuals can apply, not organizations.

The HGTV project is called “Home Town Takeover” and is planned to be a special six-episode series based on the network’s already popular “Home Town” show. The hosts, Ben and Erin Napier, regularly help renovate old homes as well as work to revitalize the downtown district in their hometown of Laurel, Mississippi.

“Something that was probably an eyesore that somebody may have torn down, they go in and just completely renovate it,” said Williams, who added he enjoys watching the show with his family.

The “Home Town Takeover” show would do the same thing but on a bigger scale.

“They opened it up as a sweepstakes to any town with a population under 40,000 that has historic homes and maybe some other parts of town that need a little sprucing up,” Williams continued.

Those interested in submitting an entry can do so at hgtvhometowntakeover.com. People can submit up to five photos and one video. The website suggests showing specific places that may need a makeover, such as a coffeeshop or home or playground, and giving a brief tour of the town to highlight “the places that need help and the people who love the town.”

The deadline for entries is February 7.

Williams encouraged people to just send in something that “comes from the heart” if they’re interested in the project.

“I know it’s a long shot, but you don’t win if you don’t apply,” he concluded.

The series is expected to air sometime in 2021.
