WINTON, NC – Sandra Kay Piland Ward, 75, of 702 North Main Street, Winton, NC, died Wednesday, September 11, 2019 in Accordius Health at Creekside, Ahoskie.

Mrs. Ward was born in Bertie County on August 2, 1944, and was the daughter of the late J. Clinton and Lennie Leigh Jernigan Piland. A graduate of Troutman’s Beauty School in Raleigh, she had worked in area beauty shops before opening her own salon in Winton, and later worked from her home as she continued to cut and style hair. While operating her own salon, and afterwards, she drove a bus for the Hertford County Public School System for over 20 years. She was a member of Winton Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, William Bartlett Ward; her son, William Paul Ward and wife, Heather, of Scotland Neck; her sister, Carolyn Lasater of Winton; two grandsons, Robert Bartlett “R.B.” Ward and William Alexander “Alex” Ward; and a great-granddaughter, Scarlett Rose Ward.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 13 at 3:00 p.m. in Winton Baptist Church and will be conducted by the Rev. Derik Davis and the Rev. Joe Futrell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church following the graveside rites, or all other times at the residence.
