MURFREESBORO – A teen from Rich Square was arrested here recently for several crimes allegedly committed in recent months in Northampton County.

Ja’Kaius Smith, age 16, was served outstanding warrants by Hertford County Sheriff’s deputies.

Captain Patrick Jacobs of the Criminal Investigations Unit of the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office said the arrest warrants were for breaking and entering, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, and assault by pointing a gun. These charges, Jacobs said, resulted from an investigation conducted by Detective Sgt. A. Leitner that began on July 22.

Smith was also served an additional warrant for larceny of an ATV four wheeler, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and felony conspiracy to commit felony larceny. Those charges resulted from an investigation conducted by Sgt. D. Shephard that began on April 26.

Smith was jailed under a $10,000 secured bond. He was scheduled to make his first appearance last week in Northampton County Criminal District Court to answer the charges in both crimes.

Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith thanked Sgt. Leitner and Sgt. Shephard for their continued efforts in these investigations.

“I am thankful that no one was hurt in this robbery and thankful that we are able to remove this subject from the streets. We will continue to work diligently on these cases involving four wheeler thefts and all other larceny cases within our jurisdiction,” Sheriff Smith stated.
