Roger L. Evans

AHOSKIE – Roger Lee Evans, age 72, a resident of Ahoskie, died Friday, July 26, 2019 at Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA.

Roger was born on January 11, 1947 to the late Helen White and Layton Gray Evans in Windsor. He spent his early childhood years there where he graduated from Bertie High School, and attended Elm Grove Baptist Church. After graduating from high school, he served his country in the United States Army.

On December 30, 1969 he married the love of his life, the former Elizabeth Futrell, they were married for 50 years. Roger worked for Schewels as a credit manager for many years before his retirement, and later worked with Bagley Equipment Company. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing the sweepstakes, and spending time with his family. Roger was member of Center Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Layton Gray Evans Jr.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Micheal Lee Evans and wife Tammie; one daughter, Mary Ann Ledford (Donald); four grandchildren, Christopher Allen Jernigan, Melissa Ann Jernigan, Carlos Gregorio Esquivel, and Micheal Chase Evans; and three great grandchildren, Zachary Jernigan, Brody Jernigan, and Harlen Saturday. Other survivors include two sisters, Dale Mulder and Bonnie Johnson; and two brothers, Bernard Evans and Donnie Evans.

A celebration of Rogers life was held Thursday, August 1, 2019 at Elm Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Preston Jernigan officiating. Burial with military honors followed at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie.
