AHOSKIE – A small child was tragically killed and a Camden County man faces charges following a two-vehicle crash near here last week.

The mishap occurred at around 5:30 p.m. on July 24 at the intersection of Willoughby Road and Hall Siding Road near the Brantley’s Grove community in Hertford County.

There, according to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper J.G. Williams, a 15-month-old child was riding in a 2004 BMW passenger car driven by his mother, 25-year-old Tiana Jones of Ahoskie. That vehicle was traveling south on Willoughby Road.

Meanwhile, a 2016 Ford passenger car driven by 30-year-old Ashton Jordan of South Mills was traveling west on Hall Siding Road.

Trooper Williams cited in his report that Jordan failed to stop his vehicle at a stop sign at the intersection, causing his car to impact the driver’s side of Jones’s BMW.

Following impact, both vehicles came to rest off the roadway in a ditch.

Jones and her son were initially transported to Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital and then airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where the child died the next day.

Williams reported that Jones was seriously injured, but has since been released from the hospital. He added that Jordan was not seriously injured.

Jordan was charged by Williams with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to stop at a duly erected stop sign.

The fatality was the ninth of the year within the NC Highway Patrol’s Troop A / District 2 area (Bertie, Gates, and Hertford counties). Four of those have occurred in Hertford County.
