“Mrs. Bazemore is one of our most dedicated and reliable volunteers. She assists patients and families in the outpatient surgical reception area and provides comfort and support for families who are waiting during loved ones’ surgeries,” said Robin Bland, volunteer services coordinator at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Bazemore and her now late husband, Grady, moved to Bertie County from Brooklyn, NY after she retired as a registered nurse at Brooklyn Interfaith Hospital. She immediately began volunteering one day a week at the hospital front reception desk in June, 1999. She began volunteering an additional three full days a week in the office of one of the hospital affiliated surgeons. Even when she was added to the payroll in the physician’s office, Bazemore continued to consistently volunteer at least one day per week in the hospital.

In 2009, it was determined that help was needed in the hospital operating room family lounge. Bazemore began volunteering as a customer relations attendant three days per week and continues in that role.

When Bazemore is not volunteering at the hospital, she is very active in her church as a deaconess, a member on the usher board, and a youth leader at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church.

She has two daughters, one son and three grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and spending time with her pets.

Jerri Lynn Askew, RN, nurse in the operating room at the hospital, said, “I have the pleasure of knowing and working with Gloria Bazemore, a dedicated volunteer in our surgical family waiting room/lounge. I have witnessed the great deal of compassion she shows in her soft-spoken way in her interactions with family members many times.”

“Mrs. Bazemore’s kindness for others always shines through with her patient demeanor and gentle smile. She is committed to providing the best care for our patients and their family members,” concluded Askew.
