AHOSKIE – The Ahoskie Woman’s Club honored and recognized Lois Smith as Clubwoman of the Year at a meeting held in May of last year. Club members then recommended her for the District 9 Outstanding Clubwoman of the Year Award.

In February of 2019, Smith was named as the winner of the District award.

Smith has been a member of the Ahoskie Woman’s Club since 2002. During her time as a member, she has served her club in numerous capacities, to include Vice President and as Chairman of the Home Life Community Service Program. She currently serves on the International Outreach Community Service Program with other members. This group encourages club members to reach beyond their own communities to the bigger global community. They focus on informative programs and learning of other countries and how we can make a lasting difference in the lives of children, their families and communities.

Smith also serves on the Ways and Means Committee for her Club. This group is responsible for the fundraising for the Club. They organize a biennial Christmas Tour of Homes, Fashion Show, and Luncheon. She is a co-chair for the luncheon portion of the event. Along with another member, she is co-chair of the Fellowship Committee, keeping up with events in the lives of the membership.

Smith has been active this year with a special project partnering with Accordius Health Creekside Care in Ahoskie. Club members have assisted residents with absentee ballot voting, Halloween trick or treating for primary school students, and Santa’s Workshop at Christmas and the National Nursing Home Week celebration. This is a new program and Smith was instrumental in enhancing this worthwhile and appreciated effort.

“Lois has dedicated herself to the service of our club for 17 years,” said Susan Joyner, past President of the Ahoskie Woman’s Club who presented Smith with the District award. “She is a quiet ‘worker bee’ who gets joy from helping her club by supporting all its projects in every way she can. She is the first to volunteer wherever there is a need. She can often be found driving other members to and from meetings.

“She hit the ground running when joining and energetically continues at a steady pace for the good of the club. No matter how small or large the request, she answers with hard work and executes her duties to the highest degree of perfection,” Joyner added.

Lois is married to Ronnie Smith. She has three children, three stepchildren, and eleven grandchildren. She enjoys a full and happy life with her family members, friends, and neighbors. She can often be found helping out neighbors when they are in need.

In her spare time, Smith enjoys reading, yard work, and country cooking. She is a member of Powellsville Baptist Church and is active in the Social Committee and the Senior Adults Sunday School Class.

Smith has been a dedicated member of the Thursday Book Club for years. She currently serves as the President, having served previously in all capacities of leadership in this club. The Thursday Book Club is the oldest, continuous operating club in Ahoskie. This group was formed to be of service to the Ahoskie Public Library and remains so to this day. Many of the Ahoskie Woman’s Club women have enjoyed membership and remain members of this club.

“Lois Smith is a leader, a faithful Clubwoman, and a valuable member of the Ahoskie Woman’s Club,” noted Joyner. She doesn’t hesitate to help her fellow clubwomen and goes beyond her duty in club activities, and serving her family and her community. She certainly deserves the honor of becoming Outstanding Clubwoman of the Year for District 9.”
