JACKSON – The Northampton County Board of Education met here twice this week to discuss details pertaining to their ongoing superintendent search.

After closed session discussions on Mar. 19 and Mar. 20, the Board voted to temporarily appoint Doug Miller as Acting Superintendent beginning Monday, April 1 through Monday, April 8. Miller’s current position with the school district is Assistant Superintendent.

Board Chair Clinton Williams explained the decision was made in order to have someone in place while they continue their search. He stated they had already begun interviewing candidates for a new superintendent and are in the process of working out contract logistics.

“We used the North Carolina School Board Association,” Williams said about how they received recommendations for the open position.

The vote for Miller as Acting Superintendent was unanimously approved.

Dr. Monica Smith-Woofter, who has served as Northampton County Schools Superintendent since July 2014, reached a resignation agreement with the Board of Education on Mar. 11. She will continue in her position until Mar. 31. Once her employment is concluded, Dr. Smith-Woofter will receive a severance payment of a little over $121,000 in accordance with the resignation agreement between her and the Board.
