Local entries win at GFWCNC State Arts Festival

MEBANE – On March 9, members of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of North Carolina (GFWC-NC) traveled from across North Carolina to attend the annual State Arts Festival at the Cultural Arts Center of Mebane.

Arts Festival entries, created by clubwomen and students who were first-place winners in each of the nine districts in North Carolina, were displayed for state-level judging. Contest categories included arts and crafts, visual arts, photography, and original literature.

Certificates and ribbons were presented to all clubwomen and student contest winners. In addition, monetary prizes were awarded to North Carolina students in grades 6-12 with winning State Arts Festival entries.

Hertford County winners included Bearfield Primary student Madison Weller, first place for literature. Hertford County High School student Destiny Vaughan was honored for her efforts with a first place of beadwork, second place for knitting, and third place for fabric craft. Jennifer Burden from East Seals UCP was awarded a blue ribbon for her interpretation of Liberty in the adult visual arts category.

Two Ahoskie clubwomen were recognized for their creativity. Katherine Allen earned a blue ribbon for her watercolor painting of magnolias; Katherine Jernigan’s acrylic rendition of baby ducks took second place.

GFWC is an international organization of community-based women’s clubs that has been working for over 100 years to address the most pressing needs of their communities and the world. In North Carolina, there are approximately 150 clubs with several thousand members.
