WASHINGTON, DC – A group of area high school students traveled with MAP Community Development Corporation (MAPCDC) to the 17th annual Historically Black College & University (HBCU) Festival in Washington, DC on Feb. 23.

This event is the largest HBCU festival in the world. This year’s event hosted over 10,000 students and recruiters from over 70 universities.

Those making the trip were An’Ron Bond and Christiana Langford (both from Hertford County High School), and Jayson Jones (Bertie Early College). All three seniors obtained immediate acceptance to one or more university, received much needed scholarship money, and made valuable connections with other college-bound youth and university personnel.

This trip was made possible by generous donations from Leroy Douglas II, Hertford County Commissioner; Derrick Morrow, General Manager of Hyatt Regency Hotel-Crystal City; Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in Ahoskie; Metropolitan Baptist Church in Aulander, and Roanoke Electric Corporation.

MAPCDC is planning a celebration later this spring to acknowledge the accomplishments of these three seniors and other local seniors who are planning to further their education or enlist in the military.

MAPCDC is a 501c(3) organization based in Ahoskie with the primary goal of helping improve the quality of life for residents in Hertford County and surrounding areas.

MAPCDC is dedicated to ensuring our local students have every opportunity to succeed. MAPCDC will continue its focus on students this year by sponsoring a Summer Enrichment Program designed to help elementary school students improve their literacy and math skills.
