MURFREESBORO – The Murfreesboro Town Council voted here Feb. 27 to hold several work sessions for the next few months in place of some of their regular meetings.

The idea was brought before the Council by Town Administrator Carolyn Brown, who suggested their next meeting be a workshop so they “can work through some of this stuff.”

The “stuff” she referred to was a variety of topics that the Council had tabled at the past couple meetings. These included things like developing an ordinance for food truck regulation, discussing a potential urban archery season to help control the deer population, and maintaining the town’s cemetery. Presumably, the work sessions could also cover points such as the town’s budget as well.

“The next meeting would be the first one in March, wouldn’t it” questioned Mayor Hal Thomas. “Do you want the first one to be a workshop or the second one be a workshop?”

Council member Billy Theodorakis suggested the workshop would be the first meeting of the month, and the second meeting would be a regular meeting as usual.

Town Attorney Buddy Jones suggested they could continue holding work sessions for the first monthly meeting through the end of the fiscal year which concludes in June.

Council member Sarah Wallace motioned to change the first meeting of each month to a work session through June as suggested, and Theodorakis seconded. The vote was unanimously in favor.

After the vote, Brown noted that the work sessions are open meetings that the public can attend. Theodorakis asked if they would still contain a public comment session like the regular meetings have.

“You can have [public] comment at the second meeting,” Jones answered.

The Murfreesboro Town Council holds meetings at 5 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. The next meeting, which will now be a work session, is scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 13.
