POWELLSVILLE – Complete details have yet to be made available in a homicide investigation in Bertie County.

What is known at this point is that what was originally believed to be a motor vehicle fatality has turned in a completely different direction.

In a press release sent yesterday (Tuesday), Bertie County Sheriff John Holley stated that at around 9 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 19), his office received a 911 call for a possible motor vehicle accident involving a moped on Center Grove Road near Powellsville. The Powellsville Fire Department and Bertie County EMS responded along with the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office.

A reporter from this newspaper stopped near the scene in an effort to learn what was transpiring, but the road was blocked off at its intersection with US 13 (at Good News Auto Parts). A law enforcement officer stationed at that intersection could not offer any details. It appeared all the other emergency responders at that location were gathered a short distance down Center Grove Road.

“It was quickly determined that the driver of a moped died of injuries not caused by the crash,” said Sheriff Holley in the press release. “The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division along with the NC State Bureau of Investigations were contacted and began a homicide investigation.”

The name of the victim was not released, nor was information regarding the cause of death.

Those with any information concerning this homicide are encouraged to contact Bertie County Sheriff’s Office at 252-794-5330, Sheriff Holley 252-724-1681, or Lt. Matt Roebuck at 252-325-3350.
