COLERAIN, NC – Duncan Perry Hughes, Jr., 70, of 107 Sunrise Street, Colerain, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville.
Mr. Hughes was born in Bertie County on July 19, 1948, and was the son of the late Duncan P., Sr. and Elizabeth Belch Hughes. The owner and operator of Colerain Appliances, after his parent’s deaths he operated the former family business, Hughes Market. A member of Colerain Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon, he was also very involved in his community. For over 35 years he had served on the Colerain Town Council, for some 40 years he volunteered with the Colerain Rescue Squad, many of those years serving as Captain, had been a member of the Colerain Volunteer Fire Department, and coached Little League Baseball in Windsor for more years than most remember. Baseball to him meant the Philadelphia Phillies, his favorite team, and NASCAR was Bill Elliott Racing, his favorite driver.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Hughes, and by his sister, Mary Beth Newbern.
Surviving are his niece and nephew, Beth and John; his aunt and uncle, Dorothy Phillips and Donald Belch; and his first cousin, Joe Van Morris, who has been by his side during all of his health and medical issues. Also surviving are other cousins, extended family members, and many, many friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 1 at 11:00 a.m. in Colerain Baptist Church, and will be conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Gary Saffell. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Friends may join the family at the home of Joe Van Morris, 106 North Academy Street, Colerain.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the building fund of Colerain Baptist Church.
