MURFREESBORO – Citing concerns about cars speeding down town roads, Murfreesboro’s Town Council members are continuing their efforts to make the streets safer for everyone.

Residents spoke during the public comment portion of the April 26 Council meeting to express their concerns about children playing and walking in the roads around Diamond Street, Boyette Street, and the portions of Main Street that they connect to. Because traffic tends to move fast in that area, the residents worried about safety and wanted to prevent any accidents from occurring.

At the April meeting, Police Chief Darrell Rowe suggested the town could install Children at Play signs. Councilman Hal Thomas agreed that signs should be put up in that area.

Billy Deanes from the Public Works Department updated the Council on the status of the signs during the May 24 meeting. He reported that the signs have now been put up on Diamond Street.

The town is also looking into slowing down traffic on High Street as well. Councilman Craig Dennis brought this subject to the Council’s attention at the May 10 meeting. The Council, in consensus with the police chief and Public Works, agreed that temporary speed bumps would be an effective way to address the issue.

Deanes reported at the May 24 meeting that they were still looking into purchasing the speed bumps, but they would probably be able to get them at a decent cost from another town.

The Council agreed that the temporary speed bumps should be placed on the section of High Street between Chowan University and Highway 11.

These road improvement efforts all come after the recent installation of the traffic circle on Lakeview Drive.

“I think it has slowed traffic down,” said Councilman Bill Theodorakis of the circle’s effectiveness.
