Mamie N. Bryan

RALEIGH – Mamie Goode Newsome Bryan died on May 8, 2017 at Morningside in Raleigh, NC, where she had resided for over three years.

Born in Hollister, NC, in 1920, she was the daughter of James Irving Newsome and Margaret Virginia Jeter Newsome. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Rupert Gunter Bryan, Sr.; her son, John Rupert Gunter Bryan, Jr. (Elizabeth); and her sisters, Mary Elizabeth Newsome Laughbon and Emma Eley Newsome Cooper. She leaves a legacy of faith, strength and love for her family and friends. Mamie lived with a strength, grace and elegance that we should all try to attain.

Mamie is survived by her daughter, Brenda Jean Bryan of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Virginia Newsome Overman (Jack) of Manteo, NC, and her niece, Linda Wiggins Bernhardt (Budd) of Spokane, WA. She is also survived by Elizabeth Waldchen Bryan of Wilmington, NC, and grandchildren: John Stephen Holleman (Eva) of Fayetteville, NC; Dr. Mary-Emma Beres (Michael) of Sparta, NC; John Rupert Gunter Bryan III (Amy) of Raleigh, NC; Robert Jefferson Bryan (Joy) of Wallace, NC; and Rodger Wilson Bryan (Susannah) of Guilford, CT, as well as great-grandchildren: Sarah-Kathryn Yates Bryan, Matthew Jefferson Bryan, Hannah Rice Bryan, Aidan Nicholas Beres, Eirwyn Eley Beres, Kayla Nicole Bryan, Natalie Kate Bryan, Carter John Bryan, Manuel Franquez and Jacqueline Franquez.

Active in her community and church, Mamie served as Assistant Comptroller for the NC State Ports Authority in Wilmington for many years.
