CORAPEAKE – A tip from a concerned citizen led to the arrest of one man on drug charges, to include trafficking in heroin, while his younger brother is being sought.

Gates County Sheriff Randy Hathaway said 24-year-old John Taylor Munday was arrested Jan. 12 after a search of his home on Union Branch Road yielded drugs and drug paraphernalia.

“We had received information about suspicious activity at a residence on Union Branch Road and we obtained a warrant and went to check it out,” Hathaway said. “We received assistance in executing the search warrant by officers with Community Corrections (formerly Probation & Parole).

Hathaway stated that the search resulted in what he termed as a “trafficking amount of heroin” as well as cocaine, marijuana, a set of digital scales, and syringes (used for injecting heroin).

The Sheriff added that Munday was charged with one felony count each of trafficking heroin, manufacturing a Schedule 1 controlled substance, possession with intent to maintain and deliver marijuana, and maintaining a dwelling or vehicle to store a controlled substance.

Munday was also charged with two misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was jailed under a $9,000 secured bond. Hathaway said Munday was released after posting bail.

Sheriff Hathaway said arrest warrants on the same charges have been drawn on Jesse Munday, age 22, the brother of John Taylor Munday.

“Jesse Munday contacted us not too long after we arrested his brother and promised to turn himself in, but he has yet to do so,” Hathaway said on Tuesday of this week.

Hathaway thanked the citizen for the information that led to this arrest.

“The citizens of Gates County are the eyes and the ears of the communities in which they live. We encourage them to contact us when issues arise, to include possible criminal activity,” Hathaway stated.

The Sheriff added that info can also be shared on a new Facebook page recently launched by the Gates County Sheriff’s Office.
