Hunter W. Spruill

WINDSOR – Hunter Wayland “Scookie” Spruill, 72, of Powell Avenue, Windsor, died Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville. He was born in Norfolk VA January 2, 1944 to the late Henry Bazemore “H. B.” and Nancy Taylor Spruill. He was predeceased by a brother, Henry B. Spruill, Jr.
Scookie was in Agribusiness as President of Spruill Farms, a partner of W & S Farms as well as Spruill Oil Company. He graduated from Woodberry Forest in Woodberry, VA; and from UNC at Chapel Hill where he was a proud DKE. He was a member of the NC Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. He was a veteran of the US Coast Guard and an avid sport fisherman, golfer and hunter.
A memorial service was held Friday December 30, 2016 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Windsor. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Gillam Spruill; their son, Wayland Outlaw Spruill and wife Lucy Pierce Spruill and their children, Isabella, Lucy Outlaw, Sally, and Sara Hunter; and their daughter, Brimage Gillam Spruill Silver and husband, Winston Beau Wood Silver and son Beau Hunter. He is also survived by his brothers, Charles Taylor Spruill and wife Jennifer, and James Walton Spruill and wife Nancy; sister-in-law Vicky Gillam Leggett and husband Joseph; and his nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his grandson, Henry Gillam Spruill; his parents, Henry Bazemore Spruill and Nancy Scull Taylor; maternal grandparents Hunter Hillery Taylor and Mattie Scull Taylor; and paternal grandparents, “Cousin” Charles Wayland Spruill and Ruth Bazemore Spruill.
The family will receive friends at their home on Powell Avenue. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Hunter’s memory may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, P.O Box 400, Gray Street, Windsor, NC or to Vidant Inpatient Hospice, 920 Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.
