Speed results in fatal wreck

WINDSOR – Excessive speed was the cause for a fatal crash that occurred near here Wednesday night.

According to a story on witn.com, 36-year-old Kenneth Ruffin of Windsor was pronounced dead after being airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper B.P. Daniel said he was on US 13 at approximately 11:40 p.m. at which time he clocked a southbound vehicle at 105 mph in a 55 mph zone.

After activating his blue lights in an effort to perform a vehicle stop, Daniel said that the vehicle – a Chevrolet passenger car – turned onto Woodard Road and then crashed about a mile down the road.

Daniel’s report revealed that the vehicle traveled off the road to the right, and veered back onto the roadway before traveling off to the left where it struck a ditch and then a tree. Daniel said the victim was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

There was a passenger in the vehicle. Daniel said that individual was wearing a seat belt and survived the crash with non-life threatening injuries.
