Thurman Chappell

WINTON – Thurman Chappell, 91, formerly of Pine Street, Winton, died Thursday, October 22, 2015 in Down East Health & Rehabilitation Center, Gatesville.

Mr. Chappell was born in Perquimans County on June 9, 1924, and was one of 13 children born to the late Caracus and Emma C. Chappell. Employed in the auto parts industry for many years in Chattanooga, TN, he was a member of Winton Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Edna Hayes, Thelma Piland, and Philena Stebbins; and by his brothers, an infant brother, Freeland, McCoy, Carey, Preston, Herman, Cleve, and Elihu Chappell.

Surviving are his daughter, Janet of Tennessee; a sister, Emily Horton of Winton; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, by the Rev. Joseph Futrell. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home the hour prior to services.
