Mary D. Jernigan

WOODLAND, NC – Mrs. Mary Virginia Dickens Jernigan, 88, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 12, 2015.

Mrs. Jernigan was born on April 9, 1927 to the late Edward Felix and Amanda Mariah Dickens. She is a native of HalifaxCounty. She graduated from Scotland Neck High School. She was a homemaker and faithful member and Sunday school teacher of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Aulander, NC.

She is survived by her four children, Blair Jernigan Britt of Rich Square, Skip Jernigan and his wife Barbara of Woodland, Rick Jernigan and his wife Margaret of Belews Creek, and Amy Jernigan Baker and her husband Garry of Union, NC. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Ben Britt and his wife Christy, Tara Britt, Sarah Jernigan Lassiter and her husband Mark, Garrett Baker, Dustin Baker, Don Jernigan, Mary Catharine Jernigan, and Ricky Jernigan, Jr.; and four great-grandchildren, Evey Britt, Brayden Lassiter, Vera Britt, and Bentley Lassiter. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Donald Ray Jernigan, Sr.

Visitation will be Saturday, August 15, from 6:00- 8:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square, NC.

Funeral services will be Sunday, August 16 at 3 pm at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Aulander, NC with Rev. Bob Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery, Woodland, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Mary D. Jernigan to the Joseph and Kathleen Bryan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (Bryan ADRC), Duke University, 2200 West Main St., Suite A 200, Durham, NC 27705.
