Waneta W. Towell

GLOUCESTER, VA – Waneta Weaver Towell, 94, of Gloucester and Chesapeake, Virginia died on July 14, 2015 at The Cottage at Gloucester House. She was predeceased by her loving husband, James O. Towell, Sr.; her parents, William W. Weaver and Annie Calloway Weaver; and her siblings, Bonner, Wesley and June, all of Norfolk, VA. Two special people, Mary T. Reed and Frances W. Hogge, sadly preceded her in death.

She is survived by her faithful children, James O. Towell, Jr. (Eva) of Gloucester and Sandra Towell Knight (Wayne) of Chesapeake, Va.  She also leaves four grandsons – Chris Towell (Sharon), Matt Towell (Heather), Gregory Knight and Jamie Knight; and eight great-grandchildren – Jordan, Gabriel, Noah, Allison, Justin (Rebecca), Tyler and Eli.  She adored them all.

Waneta graduated from MauryHigh School, Norfolk in 1939 and began her business career.  She worked as a Western Union Telegraph Operator and a secretary for her church and the Va. Institute of Marine Science.  She retired from NMEF at the Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, Va.  The job that she was the proudest of, however, was that of Wife and Mother.

She was a current member of Great Bridge Presbyterian Church and a former member of Norview Presbyterian Church in Norfolk and The First Presbyterian Church in Gloucester.

She made many friends where ever she went. Waneta loved to cook and sew, go to the beach, play cards, read a good book, watch Jeopardy and work crossword puzzles. She was a former volunteer in her community and at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.  She was an animal-lover and is survived by her canine pal, Okie.

A memorial service, conducted by Dr. Douglas Nagel, will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at 11 a.m. at The First Presbyterian Church, 6470 Main Street, Gloucester, VA. A reception will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall.
