‘Paint It Purple’

JACKSON – Cancer knows no boundaries. It never sleeps, and does not discriminate.

But what cancer cannot do is stop a local, national and worldwide effort by millions of individuals to fight back. One such effort is the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Locally, a group of Northampton citizens are spearheading a program that will place the spotlight on the never-ending fight to eradicate all types of cancer.

A group of local citizens attended Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting of the Northampton County Board of Commissioners. There they asked board members to support a proclamation that declares April 1 through May 31 as ‘Paint the County Purple’ to show active participation in Northampton Relay for Life.

“We are encouraging county residents to display a purple bow on their premises,” said Maria Jerman, one of the community planners for Northampton Relay. “We are also so happy that our county leaders are recognizing our efforts.”

In addition to citizens displaying a purple bow at their residence during the two-month time frame, Jerman asked county churches and businesses to consider doing the same.

The bows come in two sizes – small ($5 each) or large ($10). They are available from any team member participating in the 2015 Northampton Relay or by contacting Jerman at 252-578-3387.

The proclamation also declares the Wednesday (May 13) prior to the fourth annual Northampton County Relay for Life (slated for May 15-16) as “Strut Your Stuff Day.” Jerman said that day is set aside for all county residents to wear purple clothing in honor of cancer survivors.

“Almost everyone has been touched in some way by cancer, either through their own personal battle or through someone they love,” said Jerman. “If you ever wondered how you can make a difference, then please join us in our efforts to support American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Northampton County.”

She was accompanied at the meeting by other Northampton Relay committee members – Laquitta Green-Cooper, Antoine Smith, Gloria Goode and the Rev. George M. Jerman Sr. Other committee members are Barbara Davis, Genetha Powell, Sheena M. Jerman and LaDonna Maddy.

The proclamation was formally adopted by the Commissioners.

The Relay for Life event will be held at the Northampton County Cultural & Wellness Center, located just west of Jackson. It is open to the public and includes teams walking around the clock in an effort to raise money to fund cancer research. A Kid’s Walk (for up to age 12) is also a part of Relay.
