George L. Askew

WINDSOR – George Lewis Askew, 68, returned to his heavenly home and granted his angel wings on March 25, 2015. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him during his illness and ultimately gave him peace. His final days were spent surrounded by family.

George was born to David and Georgia Askew in Windsor, NC on September 17, 1946. At an early age he found hope and peace in Christ and joined the Mt.Olive Missionary Baptist Church. George worked for the Bertie County School System for 38 years in many capacities, retiring as Director of Maintenance.

George was an avid fisherman and loved serving his church, community, and assisted anyone in need.

George was preceded in death by his parents, David and Georgia Askew; and by his brother, Tommie Askew.

George’s life was a guiding light and star of inspiration to us. He is survived by his wife, Bettie Ambers Askew; four children, Derrick Askew (Sheri) of Garner, NC, Montresa McMillian (Donald) of Garner, NC, Antonio Bryant (Glenda) of Greenville, NC, and Karl Austin (Kim) of Suffolk, VA; and nine grandchildren, Kartisha, Brittany, Karl Jr., Amber, Corinda, Tyler, Kylie, Donald II, and Faith. Siblings surviving George are David Askew (Laura) of Hampton, VA, Virginia Jarmond (Matthew) of Raleigh, NC, and Shirley Hardy of Hampton, VA; sister-in-laws Vertie Askew of Hampton, VA, and Sarah Clark of Lewiston, NC; and one brother-in-law, Roosevelt Cowan of Aulander, NC. George also leaves two aunts, Louise Askew of Windsor, NC and Nancy Gilliam of New Jersey. He also heaves numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved him dearly.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Mt.Olive Missionary Baptist Church. His final resting place is in the church cemetery.
