MURFREESBORO – Sarah Ann Porter Powell, 78, of Murfreesboro, passed away on March 8, 2015 at Rich Square Healthcare Center in Rich Square, NC surrounded by family.

She was born on March 17, 1936 to the late Charlie Powell and Willie Mae Lassister Powell in Hertford County, NC.  She attended New Haven Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, NC and St. John Baptist Church in Red Oak, NC. Sarah also served on the usher boards and loved to sing in the choir. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing for her family and friends and crocheting.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Sarah preceded in death by her parents, and two husbands, Ulysses Porter and James Allen; and her brothers, David Powell, Gurney Powell, Lee Powell, Raymond Powell, Raleigh Powell, James Powell, William Powell, and Cleveland Powell,

Sarah is survived by her son, Gerald Z Porter of Murfreesboro, NC; daughter, April B Pruitt (Herbert) Oakland, CA; granddaughters, Jessica N Porter of Cincinnati, OH, Tasha Rowland of Raleigh, NC, Fatima Spivey of Raleigh, NC, and Octavia Porter of Atlanta, GA; grandsons, Dinero Mitchell of Fort Drum, NY, Camedreo Mitchell of Raleigh, NC, and Terrell Porter of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Richard Pruitt of Boston, MA, Amanda Pruitt of New Hampshire, and Christian Pruitt of New Hampshire; sisters, Lula Theresa Bussey of Atlanta, GA and Mildred Cooper of Murfreesboro, NC; one brother, Linwood Powell of Lynn, MA; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

A musical celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. at New Haven Baptist Church in Murfreesboro with arrangements by Hertford County Undertakers of Winton, NC.  Burial will follow at Carver Park Cemetery, Murfreesboro, NC.  After the burial, repast will be held at New Haven Baptist Church in the Fellowship Hall, Murfreesboro, NC

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2015 between 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Herford County Undertakers located at 416 S. Main St. Winton, NC.
