Jean L. Wadsworth

GREENVILLE – Mrs. Jean Lyon Wadsworth, 86 died in her Greenville home on Monday, February 23, 2015 after declining health in recent years. She was surrounded by those she loved.

Born November 26, 1928, she was the daughter of Dr. Henry Wise Lyon, who helped establish Bertie Memorial Hospital, and Fannie Darden Gatling, who taught piano for many years. Jean graduated from Peace College and worked in the Bertie County School System for 12 years; she volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville, NC for over 15 years where she was fondly known as “The Cupcake Lady” and was awarded the Volunteer of the Year in 2006. In addition, she delivered Meals on Wheels for the Bertie County Council on Aging in Windsor, NC.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, J.B. Wadsworth Jr.; her brother, Henry W. Lyon; sister-in-law; Janice Phelps Lyon; niece, Jan Lyon Ashley; as well as her beloved pet dogs, Gizzie and Chipper (whom she called Monkey).

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, James (Jay) B. Wadsworth III, Jean L. Wadsworth, and Henry W. Wadsworth, all of LewistonNC, and Frances D. Wadsworth of Greenville, NC; and niece, Beth Lyon Ralph.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of above organizations or to a charity of one’s choice.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Walker Funeral Home of Windsor, NC will be serving the Wadsworth family.
