Carolyn F. Jernigan

LEWISTON-WOODVILLE – Carolyn Futrell Jernigan, age 79 of Lewiston-Woodville, died at the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on Friday, January 23, 2015.  She was born in Northampton County to the late Julian and Beulah Futrell.

Mrs. Jernigan was raised and grew in Woodland, NC, graduating from Woodland Olney High School. She retired from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture where she served as head poultry grader at the Perdue Complex in Lewiston-Woodville, NC.  Mrs. Jernigan was a member of Lewiston First Baptist Church where she served as chairman of the board of deacons, choir member, Sunday school teacher and superintendent. The church was very important to Mrs. Jernigan as she remained very active.  She was a town commissioner in Lewiston-Woodville for two years.  As commissioner she was greatly involved with the renovation of the Hoggard Memorial Cemetery. She was instrumental in the development of the Bertie County Nutrition Site in Kelford, NC.  She was involved with the cancer survivor support group at the Ahoskie Presbyterian Church, as well she was the chairman of The Family of Murdered Victims and Traumatic Death Support Group of Ahoskie, NC.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Beulah Doughty Futrell; father, Julian Eddie Futrell; husband, Walter Turner Jernigan, Sr.; and brothers, Burgess Futrell and Wardell Futrell.

Carolyn is survived by her two daughters, Lynn Jernigan  Bradley and her husband Marshall of Franklin, VA, and Lora Ann Jernigan of Winterville, NC; son, Walter “Pete”  Jernigan Jr. and his wife June of Lewiston Woodville, NC; brother, Carroll Futrell of Conway, NC; three granddaughters, Marcie B. Joynes and her husband Steven of Wilmington, NC, Leigh B. Jamison of Carrolton, VA, and Julie J. Orise and her husband Mike of Roanoke Rapids, NC; grandson, Doug T. Jernigan of Windsor, NC; three great-grandsons, Blake Jamison of Carrsville, VA, Miles Orise of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Mason Orise of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and great-granddaughter, Oliva Joynes of Wilmington, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Lewiston First Baptist Church in Lewiston-Woodville, NC with the Rev. Henry Boschen officiating.  The interment will follow at the Hoggard Memorial Cemetery in Lewiston-Woodville, NC.
