MURFREESBORO – Local law enforcement officers are searching at this hour for a possible gunman on the loose in Murfreesboro.

Melvin Rodgers is being sought following a confrontation in the parking lot of McDonalds earlier this morning, where a weapon was allegedly drawn, according to Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan.

Rodgers was last seen running across Main Street in the direction of the ABC Store.

Due to the belief that Rodgers is armed, Riverview Elementary School, Hertford County Middle School, and Chowan University were placed on lockdown.

Vaughan said that Rodgers, formerly of Murfreesboro, has been sought by his office for at least one year on outstanding arrest warrants, to include a charge of kidnapping.

The suspect is described as a black male, wearing all black clothing, to include a black sweatshirt or jacket with a fur-lined hoodie. If spotted, do not approach as Rodgers is believed to be armed and dangerous. Call 9-1-1 or 252-398-4151 and report his location.
